1. Editorial

Dear reader,

After three years and a half of intense work, the OptEEmAL project comes to an end. And we are proud of what we have achieved: Our project consortium consisting of 13 partners from 8 countries has created the ideal tool to design a retrofitting project saving time and resources compared to other business-as-usual instruments: the Optimised Energy Efficient Design Platform for Refurbishment at District Level. And it works! Our platform has been validated in three demonstration districts in San Sebastián (Spain), Trento (Italy) and Lund (Sweden).
Curious to discover the OptEEmAL Platform step-by-step? We have produced our second video guiding you through the different steps of the design process. Besides, the platform is presented in detail in our brand new OptEEmAL Final Booklet. Read more in our news section.
Interested stakeholders also had the possibility to see the OptEEmAL Platform in action and discover its benefits in our OptEEmAL General and Technical Trainings organised in our three demo sites. Read more about the trainings and further events in the event section.
To celebrate the project’s achievements, OptEEmAL has held its final conference in Valladolid, Spain on 20 February 2018. This was also the occasion to visit one of the case studies of the project: the Cuatro de Marzo district where retrofitting solutions were used to validate the platform’s performance.  Do you want to find out why the OptEEmAL Platform is the ideal tool to design YOUR retrofitting project? Then have a look at our focus topic!
The project is over, but the consortium is convinced of the great impacts and significant benefits this solution brings to the construction and retrofitting sector and will continue to work on this solution to bring it to the market and to you!
Feel free to contact us at opteemal_contact@cartif.es or opteemal@steinbeis-europa.de if you have any question on the OptEEmAL Platform or the OptEEmAL project.

We wish you good reading and let’s keep in touch!

2. In the focus: OptEEmAL Final Conference in Valladolid and Project Conclusion

Project partners present the OptEEmAL Platform, bringing a new vision for the EeB sector!
To celebrate the end of an impactful H2020 project, the OptEEmAL consortium presented its Optimised Energy Efficient Design Platform for Refurbishment at District Level at the project’s Final Conference in Valladolid, Spain on 20 February 2019. Around 40 participants representing cities and public authorities as well as the energy and construction sectors discovered the multiple benefits the OptEEmAL Platform can bring to the design of retrofitting measures. Further, the audience received valuable information on the technological developments and achievements, the challenges of the project and wonderful collaboration and spirit of the consortium partners, and was guided through the different steps of how to use the platform. The conference was concluded with a site visit to the Cuatro de Marzo district in Valladolid where retrofitting measures from the R2Cities project have led to a reduction in energy consumption of approximately 50% and which served the validation of the performance of the OptEEmAL Platform. Besides, the project’s Final Booklet was first handed over to the participants, offering an excellent overview about project objectives and the different modules of the OptEEmAL Platform.

The OptEEmAL Platform – the ideal tool to design YOUR retrofitting project
The design of retrofitting projects for existing buildings still suffers from needless fragmentation, long processes and uncertainties. This hinders the building stock from becoming more sustainable and contributing to the EU’s ambitious targets of 40 % emissions reduction by 2030. Therefore, new solutions that facilitate collaboration and improve the whole process are demanded by the retrofitting sector.
The OptEEmAL consortium has worked towards reducing fragmentation, time and uncertainties of the process in order to become THE solution for designing your Energy Efficient District Retrofitting project. After three years and a half of project execution, we are proud to present a solution able to help in the design of retrofitting actions towards the improvement of the energy efficiency and performance at district scale. The work carried out by the OptEEmAL partners has been focused on developing an Optimised Energy Efficient Design Platform able to design energy retrofitting projects that are based on different energy conservation measures to improve the performance of a district. To reach this objective, the OptEEmAL consortium has created a tool able to reduce time delivery and uncertainties resulting in improved solutions when compared to business-as-usual practices.

The OptEEmAL Platform step by step:
Second video available!

After our first introductory video on the OptEEmAL project, here comes a more detailed explanation of how the OptEEmAL Platform works, why it is so innovative and how you can use it to make your retrofitting project at district level a greater success! Get insights on the design and interfaces of the platform. We’ll show you the future of energy efficient retrofitting of buildings at district level and walk you through the process of designing your retrofitting project. The tool reduces time delivery and uncertainties and results in improved solutions when compared to business-as-usual practices. Watch the video here.

OptEEmAL Final Booklet
At the occasion of its Final Conference in Valladolid, OptEEmAL had the pleasure to present its Final Booklet! On 60 pages, it gives a great overview on the objectives the project consortium has worked to achieve within the last years, the impact of our project and the roles of the different project partners. Moreover, the booklet presents the OptEEmAL Platform in more detail, focusing on its different modules, also illustrated by screenshots. The OptEEmAL Case Studies and Demonstration Cities are introduced as well. Stakeholders from the architecture and retrofitting sectors will find an extensive list of scientific publications at the end where they can profound their knowledge. Further, lessons learnt from the project partners give insights into achievements, but also challenges and bottlenecks to help future project developments.
You can download the booklet here.
